Storms at Sea

Day 17

Yesterday we spent the remainder of the afternoon and early evening sailing out of the fjord which we couldn’t see due to the poor weather. So we decided on an early show. I wanted to go Rhinestone Country as I quite like country music - Dolly Parton, Shania Twain - what’s not to like. Steve thought I was joking and really wasn’t keen but I persuaded him. So off we set for Carmen’s. We ordered an aperol spritz for me and the cocktail of the day for Steve, which was a Bacardi Mojito consisting of white rum, mint, fresh lime, sugar and soda over ice. He said it was refreshing but a bit too minty for him as it had a garden in it.

Before the show started I had to nip back to the cabin to get a cardigan. On the way I heard this loud South African voice asking why no one could open the doors (the answer was because it was too rough outside but that’s not the point) I realised immediately it was the missing man from our table because the others had described him as being very large, which this man was. But he didn’t look anything like the man Steve had pointed out to me yesterday whilst we waited to go on the safari, as the “missing” man he had been speaking to the day before. So now we had two South Africans. Which one is the “missing man?”

Anyway, back to the show - it was dire!  We managed half an hour before we crept out quietly. We wandered the ship for a while and then went into Anderson’s where Steve had a g&t. I didn’t fancy another drink. The bar is very nice - very traditional, like an old fashioned pub or high quality hotel bar or lounge.

Then dinner in Alexandria. Again no missing couple. We had a huge laugh with tears running down our faces. Great meal, great company.

After dinner the others went to a show and we went for a nightcap in the Crows Nest, then bed.

We both slept well and although the seas were incredibly rough, I found the movement very soothing.

We lay in bed until 8am when Steve went to get us a coffee which we had back in bed. Then breakfast in Horizon.

Now there are coincidences and there are coincidences and this morning was definitely a coincidence. It’s getting spooky. We were sitting minding our own business in a window seat when someone sat down beside us and asked in a loud South African voice how we had slept. Without doubt it was “Them”.  He was actually very pleasant but pretty noisy and rather full of himself. He was chatting to everyone then the football came up and Steve mentioned rugby.  He looks like an ex-rugby player.  Steve also confirmed, whilst they were getting their breakfast, that he was a) the person he had been chatting to that time he got the ice and b) was the person we saw yesterday when we went on our trip. So there aren’t two South Africans, just the one - and his wife of course. Maybe they will come to dinner one day when we are there and we can meet them properly.

I then excused myself as I was going to a watercolour class. I hadn’t bothered with yoga because the sea was wobbling way too much to be able to do anything properly. I rocked and rolled up to the Crows Nest on deck 13 and found a seat to carry on the piece I’d started last time.  A lady had to leave quite quickly as she was feeling too ill and I understand the teacher hadn’t felt great during the night.  I was ok but the sea was really rough and then someone pointed out that a squall was on the way. The ship hit a wave a plummeted down the other side with a loud bang. My stomach was left up in the air. I decided to go back to the cabin rather than finish the lesson as I really didn’t feel great. Since then I’ve been lying on the bed reading, watching tv doing puzzles etc.

Steve went to a talk on Google Tools but he was a bit late having gone to the wrong theatre (no guide😂), and had to stand so he didn’t stay to the end. But he thought it was interesting. He has also been for lunch whilst I’ve been in the cabin.

There really has been bad weather all day. Wind Force 8 according to the ship’s information board, with very rough seas.

But it is forecast to calm a little later and we

are due to dock in Trondheim a about 3.30am tomorrow.

Dinner is black tie tonight. The weather has improved somewhat but I haven’t moved. Not sure if I want to go to dinner or if I want a formal night if I do. Let’s see.
