And so it begins!

Day 1 Southampton

An early start - waking up at 3am. Last month when we flew this early we were a little blasé about the time and didn’t bother with the 2hrs ahead of the flight. We were then shocked at how busy the airport was and the length of the queues. We made it in time but it was tight and no time for coffee or anything else. This time we also had bags, so we allowed the full two hours and some. We were early into the bag drop - before our flight even opened. Then we raced through security - literally - me with my Irish passport through the EU line and Steve through the UK line. Despite being waylaid by a friendly security guy and a bit of game play by Steve at the kiosk next to me, I scraped gold 😀. We were in the cafe exactly two hours before our flight.

All went smoothly from there until til we were sitting on the runway and a maintenance issue was announced. Fortunately we were only delayed an hour and caught up 3/4 of that. Great to go through such a small airport (Southampton) - so quick. Then taxi to the Premier Inn, dump bags and SHOP! We had to pick up some things from - guess where - yes M&S, as well as all our toiletries which we didn’t bother bringing with us. Lunch at Wagamama (our first visit) then checkin to the hotel (only allowed from 3pm).

After a lazy and restful afternoon watching the olympics we ate at La Regatta, about 10 mins from the hotel, opposite the Isle of Wight ferry terminal. A bit of a home from home as it was a Spanish tapas restaurant. Very nice building, lovely staff and the food was fine, not outstanding but it was good.

A short walk home to the hotel, a glass of wine and then early to bed.

Our cruise ship wasn’t quite what we expected!
